How To Track Blackbaud Donations Using GTM

This Google Tag Manager (GTM) recipe was originally written by LumenAd.

Blackbaud is a powerful and secure tool many nonprofits use to drive donations. This level of security can make it difficult to track donation activity with GTM. Here is LumenAd’s GTM recipe for tracking donation confirmations in Blackbaud.

What’s in this recipe:

+  Two Google Tag Manager Triggers
+  Two Google Manager Tags

All four work with each other to track the Donation Confirmation of MOST Blackbaud donation pages and allows you to trigger a pixel based off of this page.

1. Download Container File if you have it

Download the container JSON file to your computer (right-click on the link and click “Save Link As” or “Save Target As” to save the JSON file to your computer).

2. Import JSON File into GTM

Navigate to your Google Tag Manager Container -> Admin Tab -> Container options, select IMPORT CONTAINER. Import the JSON file to your Container. More details here →

3. Update the Donation Page: UPDATE PAGE URL Trigger

Adjust the trigger to your specific landing page where a confirmed donation has been made.

4. Update the Donation Pixel: UPDATE HTML with Pixel Code

Drop your preferred pixel in. This GTM recipe creates a trigger. You’ll have to create some kind of tag (pixel code) manually (ex: conversion tag, retargeting tag).

5. Preview & Publish

Test this imported code and fire it in the GTM Debugger, more details here →

We also recommend checking the console as well, to ensure proper testing. If all looks good, publish!
